As part of the Jubilee celebrations, Cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez called on Hondurans to participate responsibly in the country’s public life and to carefully consider clear political proposals ahead of electoral processes. His message focused on the importance of choosing leaders committed to the common good and justice.
During his speech, the cardinal highlighted the importance of voters analyzing candidates’ platforms instead of relying exclusively on political or personal loyalties. Along these lines, he asserted that civic engagement ought to be driven by honesty, truthfulness, caution, readiness, and devotion to the community.
Rodríguez also warned about the harmful effects of corruption, describing it as a practice capable of weakening institutions and undermining Honduras’ development. Against this backdrop, he urged the public to promote a culture of responsibility in government and reject conduct that places private interests above the well-being of the population.
The cardinal additionally stressed that citizens play a fundamental part in shaping the nation’s future. In his view, casting a ballot represents a duty demanding a thoughtful assessment of those running for public office alongside the proposals they present to tackle society’s requirements.
The announcement arrived against the backdrop of a continuing political and electoral discussion within Honduras. The Catholic Church has consistently emphasized the significance of mindful, peaceful, and democratic civic involvement.
Cardinal Rodríguez’s reflection was also connected to the social dimension of the Christian faith. In his view, spiritual commitment should not be separated from citizens’ responsibilities within society, but should instead be reflected in actions aimed at promoting justice, solidarity, and the common good.
